Where to Cash Scratch-Off Tickets in New York (2026 Guide)

You scratched a winner. Now what? Where you go to collect depends entirely on how much you won. A $5 win is cash in your pocket at the nearest deli. A $5,000 win means a trip to a lottery office. Here is the complete breakdown.

Quick Reference: Where to Go by Prize Amount

Prizes Up to $600: Any Retailer

The simplest claims. Walk into any licensed NY Lottery retailer — convenience stores, gas stations, grocery stores, pharmacies — hand them your signed winning ticket, and they pay you in cash on the spot.

Prizes $601 – $5,000: Retailer or Lottery Office

This is the awkward middle zone. Retailers can pay prizes up to $5,000, but they are not required to if they don't have enough cash. In practice, many convenience stores will decline prizes over $600 because they don't keep that much in the register.

Your options:

  1. Try a larger retailer first. Big-box stores, supermarkets, and high-traffic lottery locations are more likely to have $1,000+ in cash available.
  2. Visit a NY Lottery Customer Service Center. Guaranteed to pay same-day. See locations below.
  3. Mail the ticket. Takes 4-6 weeks but requires no travel.
Important: W-2G tax form
For prizes of $600.01 and above, the lottery issues a W-2G form reporting the income to the IRS and NY State. No taxes are withheld on prizes under $5,001, but you owe the tax when you file your return. You must provide a valid ID and Social Security number. See our tax calculator for exact amounts.

Prizes Over $5,000: Lottery Office or Mail Only

For any prize over $5,000, retailers cannot pay you. You must claim at a NY Lottery Customer Service Center or by mail. Taxes are automatically withheld before you receive your check.

What to bring

1

Your signed winning ticket

Sign the back immediately if you haven't already. An unsigned ticket is a bearer instrument — anyone holding it can claim it.

2

Valid government-issued photo ID

Driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID. It must match the name you sign on the ticket.

3

Your Social Security number

Required for tax reporting. Bring your Social Security card or know the number. Without it, an additional withholding of up to 28% may be applied.

4

Completed claim form

Available at the Customer Service Center or downloadable from nylottery.ny.gov. Includes your name, address, SSN, and prize details.

Notes: NYC claims may require scheduling in advance. Check nylottery.ny.gov for current NYC office location and booking.
Best for: Manhattan, Bronx, Staten Island residents
Pro tip: Call ahead for large prizes
For prizes over $50,000, calling ahead (518-388-3300) ensures the office is prepared for your claim and can minimize wait time. Very large prizes ($500,000+) may require additional verification that takes a few extra business days.

Claiming by Mail

If you don't want to visit an office in person, you can mail your claim to the Schenectady office. Here's how:

  1. Sign the back of your ticket.
  2. Complete a claim form (download from nylottery.ny.gov or write a letter with your full name, address, phone number, and Social Security number).
  3. Make a photocopy of the front and back of the ticket and your ID. Keep the copies.
  4. Mail everything to:
New York Lottery
P.O. Box 7533
Schenectady, NY 12301-7533
Never send a ticket without copies
If your ticket gets lost in the mail and you have no copies, the prize is gone. Always photocopy both sides of the ticket before mailing. Use certified mail with tracking. Consider insuring the package for the prize value.

Special Situations

Group claims (lottery pools)

If you won as part of a group, all members must be listed on the claim form. Each person's name, address, Social Security number, and share of the prize must be documented. The lottery will issue separate W-2G forms to each member based on their share. This is critical for tax purposes — without it, one person gets stuck with the entire tax bill.

Damaged tickets

Tickets that are torn, water-damaged, or partially destroyed can still be claimed if the barcode is intact and scannable. The barcode determines the winner — not the scratch-off play area. Bring the ticket to a Customer Service Center where they have the best equipment to scan difficult tickets.

Deceased winners

If a winning ticket belongs to someone who has passed away, the executor or administrator of the estate can claim the prize. You'll need the winning ticket, a certified copy of the death certificate, and documentation showing your authority over the estate (Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration). Claims go through the Schenectady office.

Non-residents

You do not need to be a New York resident to buy or claim a NY scratch-off prize. However, non-residents still face NY state tax withholding on prizes over $5,000. You may be able to claim a credit on your home state return. Federal withholding applies regardless of residency.

Claim Deadline

You have one year from the game's official end date to claim any scratch-off prize. Not one year from purchase — one year from when the NY Lottery closes the game. For full details, see our guide: Do Scratch-Off Tickets Expire in New York?
